St. George Parish History
ST. GEORGE PARISH
On
the occasion of the dedication of the church, the name of the parish was changed
from St. Joachim to St. George. It was no coincidence that the pastor's name was
Georges. The parish served all the French-speaking people in the entire Chicopee
Falls area. Several curates assisted the pastor during those years. When Father
Hanotel was transferred in 1911, he was replaced by Rev. W. J. Choquette; from
1916 to 1927, there was a succession of curates: Rev. C. E. Proulx, Rev. P. L.
D'Amours, Rev. Frederick Brouillet, Rev. Philippe Lambert and Rev. T. Beauregard.
The famous parish census visits brought these valiant priests to the Indian
Orchard and Springfield
boundaries, all the way to Academy Street, to upper Grattan Street and to
Chinatown, a row of tenement blocks which included a Chinese laundry.
